Research Associate

Full time in Oakland


The Research Associate is an entry-level position whose core responsibility is to track community safety metrics and respond to the organization’s dynamic and emergent research needs. The Research Associate will collaborate with the Safe and Just team and the Research Director to support the organization's mission and strategies.


Californians for Safety and Justice (Safe and Just) is a nonprofit project of the Tides Center focused on replacing waste in California’s prison and justice system with common sense solutions that increase safety and reduce costs. Safe and Just achieves its mission through policy advocacy, communications, and alliance-building. Central to our work is the recognition that crime survivors deserve a justice system that prioritizes healing, prevention, and recovery, and too often these needs are unmet.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provide rapid response research assistance to the organization’s communications and local advocacy efforts. May include literature searches, fact checking, and quick analysis of recently acquired data.

  2. Track and monitor crime trends and changes in local public safety strategies. Includes organizing and maintaining databases and preparing analyses, charts, tables, and graphs.

  3. Contribute to fact sheets, issue briefs, major publications and data reports on key issues in public safety reform.

  4. Other duties as needed to achieve the mission of the organization.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  1. A methodical, detail-oriented and coordinated approach to investigating and acquiring knowledge.

  2. An ability to communicate complex topics to non-expert audiences, verbally and written.

  3. High proficiency with spreadsheets and data analysis.

  4. Experience with and enthusiasm for in-depth subject matter research.

  5. Self-starter, with the capacity to work effectively in a rapidly changing environment and be able to work quickly and cooperatively on several efforts at one time.

  6. A demonstrated history and commitment to social and racial justice.

Education and Experience

  1. 1-2 years of research experience.

  2. Prior professional experience interacting with California’s criminal justice system is preferred.
